San Diego - Day 6

Thursday found us taking a ride on the hop-on hop-off tour bus. You can catch a lot of history on one of those.  We got on at Old Town San Diego, the site of the first European settlement in present-day California. It then took us downtown along the bay where we had already been, up through the Gaslamp District and Little Italy and over to Coronado Island. We had driven over to Coronado and drove past Naval Air Station North Island where my brother-in-law and sister were station for about 3 month years ago.

The two pictures I got the tour were related to a movie shot in San Diego – “Top Gun”. The place where Goose sings “Great Balls of Fire” is the Kansas City Barbeque.  And I couldn’t get a good picture of the hill that Charlie chased Maverick up the hill. Also the beach picture is close to the place where the volleyball scene was shot. 

As we stopped for lunch I saw this guy hanging out in San Diego in February.

 

After lunch we went up to Loma Point and the Cabrillo National Monument. This the area where Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, became the first European to set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States.

The ship coming in is probably a Independence-class littoral combat ship. Behind the ship is Naval Air Station North Island. We saw several helicopters take off and land there. But we were in the wrong place when a couple F-18s took off.

 

Next we wanted to check out Seal Rock. Actually, it is a place where the Sea Lions, not seals, like to hang out.
