Monday, we drove to Washington and tried to find a parking place. We finally parked in a spot near the Capitol building, so we walked toward the Capitol for the tour. We stopped in the National Botanical Gardens to use the restrooms and the girls snapped some shots along the way.
We then took the tour of the Capitol building. We just saw the Rotunda, Statutory Hall and the room under the Rotunda and a movie in the visitors center. Bob remembers Statutory Hall being quiet different the last time we were there. But alas that was before 2001. We then drove up near Union Station to find something to eat. We found a Armand's Chicago Pizzeria that had a pizza buffet for lunch. The salad pizza were very good.
After lunch we drove up to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception http://www.nationalshrine.com near Catholic University. This place is fascinating with many little chapels and oratories along the side of the main church and separate church in the basement called the crypt and several chapels and oratories down there. Many of the contributors to building this Basilica are carved in the walls and pillars in the basement, including: the Sisters of Charity from Cincinnati and the family of George Herman "Babe" Ruth.
After the Basilica, we got something to drink and then drove around a little more. We ended up driving in the direction of Arlington National Cemetery, but it was closed just as got there. So, we gave up for the day and drove back to Ellen's.
